Keeping the Devils Out: Grotesques of the KU Natural History Museum with Dr. Leonard Krishtalka, Museum Director
Wednesday, April 17

In 1903, twelve limestone grotesques were placed on pedestals along the roofline of Dyche Hall. They overlooked the KU campus until last year, when they were taken down to conserve them from further weathering and erosion. Why were they carved specifically for the Museum, the only building at KU to feature grotesques? What does this unique mythological menagerie of stone animals represent? The answers may lie in a singular fusion of art, science, architecture, and the sacred.
