Expeditions
Growing the bird collection at KU is an important part of our work. We carry out multiple expeditions each year in interesting and exciting places around the world. Division staff and students take part in trips that usually run for a week to two months. Locations of past expeditions can be found on the Ornithology Expedition page.
Below are photos from recent trips that Moyle lab members have joined.
Four weeks were spent collecting specimens within the New Georgia group collecting specimens. Biodiversity Institute personnel (Jack H and Mark Robbins) visited two field sites across 4 weeks of field work in Nicaragua. Moyle Lab members (Luke C, Luke K and Rob) completed a 6 week long expedition at 4 field sites on Malaita. Biodiversity Institute members completed a month long expedition at 2 field sites in southwest Cameroon. Rob Moyle recently received a multi-year permit for field studies in the Solomon Islands and collection manager Mark Robbins completed the first trip to the islands. Joe Manthey and Luke Campillo visited the Philippines this summer. Joe Manthey went to Honduras this summer in a collaborative trip with Zamorano University and Cornell University. Carl Oliveros and Rob Moyle visited Java, Indonesia with colleagues from Louisiana State University and the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense. Carl Oliveros and colleagues from Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation visited the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm on Mindoro Island, Philippines Carl Oliveros and Rob Moyle traveled to the Bokor National Park in southwest Cambodia. Mike Andersen and Carl Oliveros traveled to the DRC with collaborators from the Centers for Disease Control and the University of Kinshasa. Pete Hosner visited Mongolia with colleagues from the University of Nebraska and University of New Mexico.
