Student Travel Awards

2014 SSAR student travel awardees

Ten travel awards of $500 US each are available to students to help defray the cost of traveling to the 2015 SSAR meeting in Lawrence, KS. Applicants for travel award must be students and current members of SSAR, must not have previously received a travel award from SSAR, and must be the first author of a paper or poster to be presented at the meeting in Lawrence.

The application package must include: 1) a letter signed by his/her major advisor or department chair that states that he/she is not completely funded for travel from another source and, if the research is co-authored, that the work was primarily the product of the applicant; 2) a copy of the abstract that was submitted for either poster or oral presentation.

All qualified applicants will be pooled and winners will be drawn at random. Winning applicants are required to volunteer 3-4 hours during the 2016 annual meeting at the bidding table for the Silent Auction and the viewing room for the Live Auction. Students from the immediate vicinity of Lawrence, as well as current members of the SSAR Travel Awards Committee, are excluded from applying for a travel award. Award checks will be disbursed at the SSAR Business Meeting. Application materials  (in either PDF or Microsoft Word format) must be sent to Vincent Farallo by 30 April 2015. For more information, contact: Vincent Farallo (vf304710@ohio.edu) or Mike Jorgensen (mj207406@ohio.edu).

Bars and NIghtlife of Interest for Student Visitors

The Burger Stand at Casbah.

Downtown Lawrence centered on Massachusetts street (a.k.a. Mass) between 11th and 6th streets and is the best place to head if you want food or drink near the conference venue. It should take about 15 or 20 minutes to walk downtown from campus. The walk from the hilltop campus and meeting venue to downtown is downhill, but you'll obviously need to trek back up the hill when you are ready to return.

KU graduate students suggest a few bars and restaurants for visiting students.
