A Tree of Life example with no labels, is a circle with multiple species represented in different colors.

Phylogenetic Modeling

The Phylogenetic Modeling division is focused on phylogenetic inference. Researcher Mark Holder is interested in both the statistical basis of tree estimation and the wide range of algorithms used to exploit phylogenies to answer evolutionary questions.

The division develops statistical and computational tools for learning about the genealogical relationships between species. Our statistical work uses Bayesian and maximum likelihood approaches. We have worked on developing new models of evolution and new Markov chain Monte Carlo procedures for estimating trees.
