Although my general research interests are centered on the systematics and morphology of amphibians, with particular emphasis on amphibian osteology and on anurans, I have conducted studies of the systematic relationships and evolution of fossil and living lower tetrapods (i.e., temnospondyls). These studies were undertaken to (1) sort out systematic problems, and (2) describe evolutionary patterns in order to (3) speculate on evolutionary processes and mechanisms. I am interested in the osteological diversity of fossil and Recent amphibians, the patterns of this diversity, and the mechanisms by which these patterns have been achieved.
Grant-supported research has supported work on pipoid anurans, which are represented by fossil and Recent taxa included in three families and about 13 genera. This research effort has involved phylogenetic analyses of pipoid frogs to resolve intergeneric relationships of fossil and living taxa. Data on which the analyses are based include primarily (but not exclusively) morphological (external morphology of adults and larvae, and myological and osteological observations) and ontogenetic information. Several collaborative studies with Dra. Ana Báez (Univ. Buenos Aires) produced descriptions and phylogenetic studies of fossil and Recent pipoid frogs from South America, Africa, and Europe (Cretaceous, Oligocene and Miocene, 65–30 mya).
Collaboration in an NSF-funded Amphibian Tree-of-Life Grant has funded baseline studies of morphological diversity of some large, poorly known groups of frogs—namely, Glassfrogs of the New World tropics, and microhylid frogs. The latter is a particularly enigmatic group of about 450 species found around the world. These anurans seem to have undergone a radiation that produced a morphological diversity among their ranks nearly equivalent to that seen across all frogs and toads; as a consequence, the relationships and evolutionary history of microhylids have proved intractable until tissue samples became available for molecular analyses. Now that a coarse framework of relationships is available, we are free to address some fascinating evolutionary questions with respect to the peculiar morphologies of these anurans and their larvae.
